Because our results generally run counter to that expectation, we are reassured that this is not a major source of bias. Furthermore, the similar results between our findings and those of other Asian cohorts suggest the findings are likely to be generalizable. The differences we have observed in microstructure and stiffness may, in part, underlie the lower risk of fracture in Chinese women. The reasons for the age‐ and site‐specific differences are not clear and cannot be addressed by our study, but our findings suggest that some of the mechanical advantages observed in young Chinese women may, in part, dissipate with aging and/or menopause.
